Called 'obscene' Shivan & Narresh’s skiwear showcase in Gulmarg sparks debate amidst Ramadan

Luxury fashion label Shivan & Narresh marked their 15th anniversary with an opulent fashion showcase in the snow-covered paradise of Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir. The duo, known for their signature prints and avant-garde resort wear, unveiled a striking ski collection featuring sculptural ski suits, apres-ski ensembles, and statement winter layers. However, the event quickly turned controversial, igniting debate over cultural sensitivities and timing.

The fashion show that took over social media
Held on 7 March, the show was a visual spectacle, models gracefully striding on snow-clad runways, adorned in vibrant art prints, 3D embellishments, and fluid silhouettes. The collection seamlessly blended functionality with luxury, redefining modern ski aesthetics with a bold maximalist touch. Yet, while the fashion world celebrated this boundary-pushing moment, videos from the event circulated widely on social media, drawing criticism for its timing during the holy month of Ramadan.
A controversy unfolds
The show, intended as a celebration of style and craftsmanship, instead found itself at the center of heated debates. Religious and political leaders, including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, condemned the event, deeming it inappropriate for the region’s cultural and spiritual ethos. “Outrageous! That in the holy month of Ramzan, an obscene fashion show is organised in Gulmarg,” Farooq expressed on X (formerly Twitter).

Adding to the conversation, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah acknowledged the public sentiment, stating that the images displayed a disregard for local sensitivities. He has since ordered an official report on the matter within 24 hours.
The brand’s legacy & skiwear vision
Despite the controversy, Shivan & Narresh remain pioneers in India’s luxury swim and ski fashion, merging global trends with Indian artistry. Their Gulmarg show spotlighted the growing demand for high-fashion skiwear in India, offering an elevated take on après-ski dressing with bold colours, structured silhouettes, and fluid drapes.

While the videos from the show have now been deleted, the event has sparked a larger conversation on fashion’s intersection with cultural landscapes. For designers, navigating these nuances remains a crucial aspect of showcasing creativity on a global platform.
