NEW DELHI: The heartbreak of losing a thrilling 2024 T20 World Cup final against India in Barbados must still linger for South Africa. They were on the cusp of securing their maiden ICC T20 World Cup title, but the infamous ‘Chokers’ tag resurfaced at the worst possible moment, denying them the coveted trophy. A sudden collapse saw their dreams shattered, leaving Proteas and their fans heartbroken.
Seeking redemption, South Africa will look for a fresh start as they begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Afghanistan on February 21 at the National Stadium in Karachi.

Winners of the inaugural Champions Trophy in 1998 under Hansie Cronje’s leadership, South Africa will be eager to shed the ‘Chokers’ tag once and for all and add a major trophy to their rather empty cabinet.
The Proteas have reached the semifinals five times in eight editions of the Champions Trophy, claiming the title in 1998 and making the final four times (in 2000, 2002, 2006, and 2013).
Heading into the ninth edition of the tournament, South Africa, led by skipper Temba Bavuma, boast a formidable batting lineup featuring Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, Rassie van der Dussen, Tristan Stubbs, and David Miller.
Their bowling attack, spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj, will play a crucial role in their quest for success.
RECENT OUTING
South Africa had a disappointing run in the recently concluded Tri-Nation Series in Pakistan.
Against New Zealand, South Africa posted a competitive 304/6, powered by a brilliant 150 from Matthew Breetzke. However, they failed to defend the total as New Zealand chased it down in 48.4 overs.
In their clash against Pakistan, South Africa put up a commanding 352/5, only to see their hopes dashed as Pakistan successfully overhauled the target in 49 overs, thanks to centuries from Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha.
Despite back-to-back defeats, South Africa showed resilience, putting up a solid fight in both high-scoring encounters.
As they gear up for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the Proteas will once again enter the tournament as strong title contenders.
