The debate over DST—a system that moves clocks forward in spring and back in fall—has persisted for decades, with proponents citing longer evening daylight hours and opponents arguing for brighter mornings, particularly for schoolchildren. Trump’s comments reflect the complexity of legislating time standards, despite years of bipartisan efforts to abolish or make DST permanent.
The Sunshine Protection Act, a legislative proposal to make DST permanent, has been reintroduced five times since 2018, with support from both Democrats and Republicans. Sleep-deprived employees also engage in more cyberloafing, with a 6.4% rise in leisure browsing. Aligning work hours with natural light could mitigate these effects. For instance, standard time promotes earlier sunlight exposure, stabilizing melatonin production and reducing risks of heart attacks, strokes, and seasonal depression. Companies may adopt flexible hours or phased adjustments to ease the transition.

The financial toll of DST is multifaceted. While proponents argue it reduces energy consumption, studies estimate a $434 million annual loss in U.S. productivity due to sleep disruptions6.
