Across the world, women play many roles in their lifetime– from being a daughter, sister, wife, mother to being a good professional in their chosen field of work (in many cases). And so, to honour women and womanhood, each year March 8 is celebrated as the International Women’s Day. This is a day to honour and thank women for all that they do for us, making our lives better. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, this year Google is honouring the remarkable achievements of women in STEM fields– i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics– with a beautiful doodle on their homepage.

Sharing the idea behind celebrating the remarkable women in STEM, the company said in a statement, “With our Doodle, we honor visionary women in STEM fields. The Doodle artwork spotlights groundbreaking contributions by women who revolutionized space exploration, uncovered ancient discoveries, and pioneered lab research that fundamentally shaped our understanding of physics, chemistry, and biology. And these achievements represent just a small fraction of women’s contributions to science.”

Women’s Day

International Women’s Day 2025 theme
It was in 1975, when the United Nations designated March 8 as the International Women’s Day and each year, this day has a specific theme not just to celebrate women but also highlight their issues. For 2025, International Women’s Day theme is “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment.” This theme highlights the importance of having a more balanced world by ensuring equal opportunities, rights, and empowerment for all girls and women.
And so, this year’s Google Doodle goes well with the theme as it emphasises on the need for more gender equality in the STEM fields. “Their work represents the ongoing progress towards gender equality, yet STEM remains one of the areas where significant gaps still persist. Currently, women represent only 29% of the global STEM workforce. But this number grows larger every year,” the statement further read.
Importance of having more women in STEM
1. Diversity leads to more innovations
Women bring unique perspectives, creativity, and problem-solving skills to STEM fields, leading to more innovative solutions and discoveries.
2. Closing the gender gap in STEM careers
Increasing women’s participation in STEM ensures equal opportunities, reduces wage gaps, and strengthens workforce diversity, leading to more equitable economic growth.
3. Representation inspires and encourages future generations
Visible female role models in STEM encourage young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, breaking stereotypes and fostering ambition.
Some of the remarkable women in STEM over the years are: Marie Curie- who pioneered research on radioactivity; Rosalind Franklin- she played an important role in discovering the DNA double-helix structure using an X-ray crystallography; Jane Goodall- popular English zoologist and primatologist; among others.
Happy International Women’s Day 2025!
