Parambrata Chatterjee REACTS to Anurag Kashyap calling mainstream Bengali cinema 'ghatia': 'We have stopped focusing on…’

Parambrata Chatterjee addressed Anurag Kashyap’s critique of Bengali cinema while discussing the decline of mainstream Bengali films. He highlighted the impact on the broader success of alternate cinema. Filmmaker Srijit Mukherji emphasized that creating unique Bengali films, rather than remakes, is essential for revitalizing the industry.

Parambrata Chatterjee recently reacted to Anurag Kashyap‘s comment calling Bengali cinema ‘ghatia.’ The actor also expressed his views on the decline of mainstream Bengali cinema, highlighting that its health is closely linked to the success of alternate cinema.
At SCREEN Live, Parambrata explained that the decline of mainstream commercial Bengali cinema has impacted the success of other types of films, as a larger audience is needed for any kind of cinema to thrive. He pointed out that in 2011, while Bengali cinema was experiencing a resurgence with filmmakers like Srijit Mukherji and Kaushik Ganguly making popular films, the industry unexpectedly shifted away from creating mass-market Bengali entertainers.

Srijit Mukherji highlighted that filmmakers should focus on making films that reflect the essence of Bengal, rather than relying on remaking South Indian films. He pointed to the success of movies like Kantara and Pushpa 2 in the South as examples, suggesting that Bengal needs its own unique films in that vein.

Srijit Mukherji and Parambrata Chatterjee’s latest film, Shotyi Bole Shotyi Kichhu Nei, is currently playing in theatres. It’s an official adaptation of the 1989 Hindi film Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, which was itself a remake of the American classic 12 Angry Men. The film features an ensemble cast, including Kaushik Ganguly, Kaushik Sen, Ritwick Chakraborty, Anirban Chakrabarti, Ananya Chatterjee, and Arjun Chakrabarty in key roles.
