A poignant prayer meet was held at the Shanmukhananda Auditorium in Mumbai to honor the unparalleled legacy of Padma Vibhushan Ustad Zakir Hussain. Organized by his family, including his brothers Ustad Fazal Qureshi and Ustad Taufiq Qureshi, the December 27 evening brought together musicians, admirers, and close friends to pay tribute to the legendary tabla maestro.
The gathering began with a soulful Taal Pranam performed by Ustad Fazal Qureshi, Sabir Khan, and students, followed by a Kabir bhajan rendered by Devaki Pandit. Anchored by Yogesh Samsi, the event featured moving speeches by luminaries like N Rajam, Suresh Talwalkar, Louis Banks, and Javed Akhtar, who reflected on Ustad Zakir Hussain’s transformative contributions to global music and his ability to connect across cultures.
N Rajam highlighted his groundbreaking efforts in blending traditional Indian classical music with global sounds. Suresh Talwalkar shared heartwarming anecdotes celebrating his artistry and kindness, while Louis Banks spoke of his fusion brilliance. Javed Akhtar noted, “There was no gap between his thought and creativity. What he felt simultaneously reflected in his creation.”
The prayer meet also included a video tribute by Kunal Kapoor, encapsulating Ustad Zakir Hussain’s illustrious career and his profound impact on music lovers worldwide. Shri Ashish Shelar, Minister of Culture, shared a personal memory, recalling Zakir Hussain’s humility, “Meeting Zakir Bhai was humbling. His magical fingers and modesty left an indelible mark on my life.”
In an emotional speech, Ustad Fazal Qureshi said, “Zakir Bhai’s untimely passing has reminded us of life’s unpredictability, leaving us in grief. His influence inspired not only percussionists but musicians across genres. His legacy will continue to resonate worldwide.”
Ustad Taufiq Qureshi added, “Zakir Bhai will always be remembered as a transformative force in music. His roles as a brother, mentor, and inspiration will forever guide us.”
